SOURCE: Just wanted to determine, for a Kawasaki bayou
The valve is open when the lever and valve are parallel. Generally that is down. When the lever is pointing across the valve it is closed. Think T vs. I. If the lever and valve cross it's closed, if they go the same way it's open.
That applies to a two position valve, if your Bayou has a reserve postion it could be different. That would be three positions and across one way would be open, down would be reserve, and across the other way would be closed. Should be marked on the petcock if that is the case.
SOURCE: no key for our kawasaki bayou 220
On the Bayou 220 you have 2 wires from the Ignition Switch. If I was you I would wire them 2 to a toogle switch or push bottom start.

check the coil for the spark plug, it may be bad, it is directly connected with the stator and magnito, thats where it gets its electricity for the spark, or clean the carburetor out, there is three things an engine needs to run. fuel, compression, ignition or (spark) all malfunctions are branches off of this
