It's almost always a sign of 1 of these. Low voltage to the solenoid or bad solenoid. 90% the low voltage. Check your batt voltage 12.5v or more would be nice then clean, check, tighten every connection between the batt and your solenoid. If all of this passes take the wire going to your starter and connect it direct to positive batt. If it doesn't work starter is bad.

Ok now when you try and start you ATV turn your lights on and if they dim it could one of 2 things battery number one get it tested. number to could be your starter it self now if you do hit the mud puddles like we do will kill a starter every year. now if you try to start it and your lights don't dim then your brushes in starter are stuck that happen a lot in atvs that play in mud hope this helps ppl but don't always assume battery

Question edited for clarity.
Question moved from Cars and Trucks to make model category.

The Solenoid Relay?

This? Test it.

Wiring, these is also a 'Start Diode', not sure what that is about, a diode only lets voltage travel in one direction.

The Polaris forums are a good source of information.

2008 polaris sportsman 500 won't start, but relay clicks and will start when relay terminals are jumped

I have seen this on a few machines. Start tracing wires. Ground wire from the key is the first on Id check. Grounds on these machines go bad from vibration and rough terrain. Not to mention silt in the water.
