1996 polaris sportsman 4*4 wont shift

I got a 1996 400 polaris wont shift but when it does it **** ur back and used to you can feather the gas with ur thump and it wood change and it wont do thing now

If the idle is set to high the clutch will partially engage and prevent you from shifting gears

You can try to adjust the linkage below the shifter should be 2 rods there one is low gear other is forward and backwards if that's doesn't do it then you have to pull trans out and sleeve the shift heads hope you can just adjust it

How to tell if seloid bad?

You can check a solenoid by using an ohm meter. Or just take it to a auto shop and ask them to check it for you if you don't have one. They can check it real quick and shouldn't charge you anything.
