I have a 1996 Sportsman 500 i bought for 800$ (Under the knowledge the guy didn't know why it wouldn't crank) The first thing i did was release the compression. It cranked up, but had a TON of rattling noise. I took it to Polaris and they tore the engine down to find that the oil pump was broken, 1/4 head of the piston had broken off and busted everything up. I found a engine from a ATV shop up in Mass. for 675$ It was supposed to run flawless, but Polaris says there's a slight knock and the owner says it didn't have that, but is trying to help me. I would like to tear this engine down and see it for myself, if it's busted up, i will return it, but if it's just the valves or something, i would fix it myself with y'alls help. They say it's a LIGHT knocking noise.

Check the cam shaft. The exhaust lob is the weak spot. They will wear down to nothing.

you probly need a new heat sensor, its located on the bottom right of your rad, i had the same problem with my 700 the fan only worked when it was already over heating, i cut the wires flush at the sensor drilled a hole above the key switch and mounted a toggle switch, no more over heating,

follow ur throttle cable down to cars there should be a plastic screw close to cable to adjust idea but with polaris that screw can be hard to find with all the plasticc they put in way but if u can see carbs easy enough u will see the idle screw

The starter drive on the starter motor is defective. The teeth on the flywheel could be chewed up too. If you just installed a new starter, you may have to add or subtract clearance spacer metal tabs so that the starter drive engages properly with the flywheel.
