sounds like it thinks it stuck in reverse

mine did the same thing & then it finaly quit running altogether...the gas gauge stoped showing in the display also. I pulled the old fuel pump out & replaced it with one out of a 97 ford areostar witch has an almost indentical pump & now the machine runs like new...and my gas gauge started showing again & I saved myself 500 bucks because the pump i used was gave to me...lol

If you remove the Driver side palstic panel, there is a Black Pouch attached to the black wire conduit thatt you have to cut to see the 20 AMP fuse (be careful so taht you do not cut the red wires). I just did mine. You can buy it online on Amazon. Good luck.Ray

When it does not start spray come starter fluid into the throttle body/carb to see if it will run. If so, it is a fuel problem. Also check electrical connections for looseness. Possible contamination of the fuel with water.

Could be the coil pack going bad or fuel pump. Find the coil pack and spray water on the outside of it. Not a lot just a stream to keep it cool. It should be on top. Here is a video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woE4OIhCvAs

check conections on new parts just had that deal new cdi had one wire that pushed out just enough to lose contact. sounds strange but it happens.

This is a timing issue. The crank and cam are out of time. It might be excessive wear,

Follow the positive cable from the battery,it will go to a terminal,which will lead to the starter.

5 years standing is a long time. Carburetor float will be stuck. Pull the plugs and see if they are wet and also if you have a spark. Strip and clean carb and jets. Check fuel tap and fuel delivery. Drain any fuel and replace with new. Replace the spark plug. No lights is odd. Check if there are fuses? I presume You mean a Polaris Explorer 400 ATV, rather than a Ford Explorer 4.0 litre? I did some edits to fill in the blanks, but Fixya have mixed up the image for Polaris Pool Cleaners :>) Your oil pump is important, so you need to check inside or just replace it. The other place to watch for pieces of aluminium casting is around bearings and seals. If they fail, the damage can be great, but castings can be filled and machined.
